Ford Motor Company is an automotive factory from the United States founded by Henry Ford who came from Michigan. As he grew older he demonstrated extraordinary talent in engineering and the world’s first motor vehicle production organization, the Model T. The company that Ford founded became the largest family-controlled corporation in the world, mobilizing the American economy by providing motorized vehicles for all.
Henry Ford was born into an Irish-Belgian immigrant family, in 1863 on a farm near Greenfield Village, Michigan. There were 2 important events in his life that formed his determination to enter the automotive world. The first happened when he was 12 years old, when he first saw the steam-powered towing machine. Then the second, happened the following year, when he had to face the death of his mother.
His father hoped Henry would take over the farm, but Ford refused. In 1879, at the age of 16, he worked as an apprentice machinist in Detroit. Then he returned to the farm, because he was hired to manage Westinghouse’s portable steam engine. That was his first job as an engineer.
His Interest in Machines
Ford was interested in the oil-fired engine invented by Karl Benz. In between working almost a full day for a company, he took the time to build an engine that runs on oil. Until finally in 1896, Ford managed to complete a vehicle that was named “Quadricycle”.
The vehicle is made of a light metal frame with four bicycle wheels and is driven by a two-stroke, air-cooled, approximately 4 horsepower engine assembled in a brick shed behind his Detroit home. In order for the prototype to develop, Ford sold the Quadricycle to continue building other vehicles.
Then in 1899 he left the company and then found investors to found the Detroit Automobile Company. He only managed to make 25 vehicles when the company was dissolved in 1900. Ford’s business did not stop there, in 1903, Ford with 11 other investors with $ 28,000 capital founded the company Ford Motor Company.
Manufacturing of the “Fordmobile” first started in Detroit, but business has only been growing slowly. until one day Ford drove a powerful Ford racing car that reached speeds of 91.3 miles / hour and traveled 1 mile on the ice of Lake St. Clair. This led Barney Olfield, a famous racer, to dub the car with the name “999” in homage to the racing locomotive of the day and take the vehicle around America, promoting the Ford brand in the United States.
But Ford and a few of its people at Mack Avenue were more interested in developing not a flashy race car but an affordable and useful four-cylinder car with a closed engine and transmission which they called the “Model T” or “Tin Lizzie”.
Types of firts Ford Cars
Ford Model A
The company produced several types of cars, from the Ford Model A which had two cylinders with the 8HorsePower to the K and Model S in 1907.
Ford Model K
The Model K is the first Ford model for a six-cylinder car known as “The Gentleman’s Roadster” and “The Silent Cyclone”.
Ford Model T
The following year, Ford released a Model T made at the Piquette Road Manufacturing Plant. This is the first factory owned by the Ford company. One year of production until 1909, 18,000 T models were created. Due to increased demand, the company moved to a bigger place.
In 1911, Ford had produced 69,762 T models and by 1912 it had produced 170,211 units. In 1913, the company developed the basic techniques of assembly line and mass production.
The company introduced an assembly belt, an innovation created by four employees who got the idea of a tool used by meat packers in Chicago. This assembler tire reduces the time needed to complete the vehicle where to assemble the chassis from 12.5 hours can be lowered to 2 hours 40 minutes (a record that was achieved 1 hour 33 minutes).
You could say, the T model transforms rural America from its anti-car attitude to the favorite vehicle for the people. Farmers use cars to transport agricultural and livestock produce, and it is used to supply power for rice mills and sawmills.
Even more importantly, people in rural areas can now travel to the city regularly, to shop and socialize.
